Placement
Where to put a dumpster
A good spot is flat, firm, easy to reach from the street and close to the work. Decide it before the truck arrives so the driver isn't guessing.

Checklist
Walk the spot first
- Length
- Measure the open run of driveway. Add a car length for the truck to tilt and slide the box off.
- Overhead
- Power lines, cable drops and low branches have to clear the truck's raised hoist.
- Width
- Gate posts, mailboxes and parked cars need a few feet of space either side.
- Slope
- Hillside driveways are common here. A container on a steep grade can shift; ask the driver where it sits safely.
- Ground
- Pavement or gravel beats lawn. Soft or wet grass ruts under a loaded box.
Protecting asphalt and concrete
Steel rails concentrate the weight of a full container on a few narrow strips. Two or three sheets of plywood or long boards under the rails spread it out. New asphalt is softer in summer heat, so be extra careful in July and August.

HOAs, renters and neighbors
HOA rules vary: some cap how many days a container may stay, ask for notice, or limit placement to the driveway. Check before you book. Renters should get the landlord's okay. A quick word with the neighbors avoids a blocked driveway and other people's trash in your box.
If the street is the only option, read the permit guide first.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.
