What moves the price of a roll-off rental

Every rental company sets its own rates, and they move with the job, so you won't find numbers here. What you will find is the anatomy of a quote, which makes two of them easier to line up.

The parts of a quote

Seven levers on a dumpster quote

Container size
More cubic yards means a heavier haul and a bigger landfill bill.
Included tonnage
Quotes bundle a weight limit. Anything past it shows up as an overage on the final bill.
Days on site
The base rate covers a window of days; keep the box past it and a per-day charge kicks in.
Debris type
Heavy fill, roofing and yard waste may be priced differently from general household debris.
Distance
Homes farther from the company's yard, such as out toward Daleville, can cost more to serve.
Permits
A street placement in the city needs a permit the company applies for; ask whether its cost is included.
Specific items
Mattresses, tires and appliances sometimes carry a per-item fee.

Questions that make quotes comparable

  • How many tons are included, and what is the overage rate?
  • How many days, and what does each extra day cost?
  • Does the figure cover drop-off, haul-away and the landfill fee?
  • Are there fees for specific items I plan to load?
  • What happens if the box is overfilled or a driver can't reach it?

Write the answers down. The cheaper-looking quote isn't always cheaper once overage and extra days are in.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.

Phone conversations can be recorded for quality and billing (how referrals work, privacy). Trash carts, recycling and curbside bulk pickup belong to City of Roanoke Solid Waste, not this number.
