Moving

A dumpster for moving or downsizing

Every box you don't pack is one you don't carry. A container in the driveway the week before a move lets you decide quickly and keep going.

Brick ranch house with moving boxes on the porch and a dumpster in the driveway holding an old sofa and mattress

A workable order

Three passes through the house

  1. Two weeks out: sell and donate

List furniture and give away what's usable while you still have time.

  2. The week before: the container

Have it dropped off once the giveaways are gone, and work room by room.

  3. Moving day: last sweep

Toss the final bits, then call for pickup so the box isn't left for the new owners.

Furniture, mattresses and electronics

Couches, dressers and bed frames are the bulk of a moving purge. A 15 or 20 yard covers most houses; a 30 for a long-time family home with a full basement.

Some rental companies charge an added fee for mattresses or box springs. Ask during the quote instead of finding out on the invoice.

Old TVs and computers shouldn't go in a roll-off. The City of Roanoke's e-cycling page lists retail drop-off programs; wipe any hard drive first.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.
