Choosing a size

How to choose a dumpster size

Close enough is fine here. A rough heap estimate plus what the debris is made of points to the right container, and the rental company double-checks before booking.

Estimate in three moves

From a heap to cubic yards

  1. Pace it out

Walk off the floor space your junk would cover if you piled it waist-high in the garage. Note the feet each way and the height.

  2. Do the arithmetic

Length × width × height, then ÷ 27. A heap 9 ft by 6 ft by 4 ft comes to 216 cubic feet: 8 cubic yards.

  3. Leave slack

Chairs and branches never nest neatly. Go one size past your answer, so 8 yards means a 10 or a 15.

Between two sizes

Bigger box or a second haul?

Go up a size when

  • The debris is light and bulky
  • You expect to find more as you go
  • The driveway has room for the longer box

Stay smaller when

  • It's mostly shingles, tile, plaster or dirt
  • The spot is tight or the driveway is steep
  • You can schedule a swap if it fills up

Never above the rim

Whatever size you rent, the load has to stay level with the top of the walls. Drivers can refuse to haul an overfilled box, or ask you to unload part of it. If it's getting close, call for a swap.

Typical dimensions for each size are on the sizes page.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.
