Remodels and repairs
Salem's bulk truck won't take project debris
Salem's bulk collection policy is for routine household items and normal yard trimmings. It leaves out debris from demolition, renovation or remodeling, anything from work that needs a Salem building permit, and anything produced by someone you paid to do a job. Dirt, rock, masonry, stumps and land-clearing debris are excluded as well.
So if you're redoing a bathroom yourself or clearing an overgrown back lot, plan on a container or your own trips to the transfer station from the start.
On the street
Salem's right-of-way permit
- Applies to
- Any non-vehicular object, a storage container for example, placed temporarily in a city street parking area.
- Issued by
- Community Development, 540-375-3032. Details on the city's permits page.
- Driveway
- A container on your own driveway stays off the public right-of-way.
Doing it yourself
Twelve transfer station trips a year
Salem households can take loads to the Salem Transfer Station on Indiana Street or to Tinker Creek in Roanoke, up to 12 trips a calendar year at no charge. For a small job with a pickup truck that may be enough. A multi-room cleanout usually isn't.
Old refrigerators or freezers set out for the city need their doors removed or secured, and the refrigerant evacuated first.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.
