Dumpster permits in Roanoke
In the City of Roanoke, a dumpster set in the street or on the sidewalk needs a city permit. On your own driveway it's on private property, which usually means no right-of-way permit.

The right-of-way permit
- When
- Any time the container sits in the public right-of-way: the street, the curb lane or the sidewalk.
- Who applies
- The dumpster company. The city's permit page tells people to contact their dumpster or storage container company to apply.
- How long
- Each permit runs for up to 30 days in a row. Keeping it longer means a new permit for the next 30.
- Your part
- Say on the call that the box has to go in the street, so the company can apply before the drop-off date.

Different rules outside the city
Salem
Salem's right-of-way permit covers any object, such as a storage container, placed in a city street parking area. Community Development handles it at 540-375-3032.
Roanoke County
The county says VDOT maintains all public roads there. Using VDOT's right-of-way means a land use permit from the local VDOT office, so a driveway spot is far simpler in Cave Spring or Hollins.
Vinton
Ask Vinton Public Works at 540-983-0646 before placing a container on a town street.
Daleville
Botetourt County homes almost always use the driveway. Ask the rental company about anything else.
HOAs and private roads
A homeowners' association can't issue a city permit, but it can set its own limits on how long a container may sit in view. Read the covenants or ask the board before the drop-off. On a private road, the people who maintain the road get a say too.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.
