Remodels
A dumpster for kitchen and bathroom remodel debris
A tear-out produces two kinds of junk at once: airy stuff like cabinet boxes and drywall, and dense stuff like tile set in mortar. The container has to handle both.

Typical loads
Kitchen or bathroom?
- Bathroom to the studs
- The old tub, the vanity and toilet, wall tile with its cement board, maybe a window. Small in volume, so a 10 or 15 yard, but the tile weighs a lot.
- Kitchen
- Upper and lower cabinets, laminate or stone counters, the floor and a soffit. A 20 yard is the usual call.
- Two rooms together
- A 30 yard, or a 20 that gets swapped for an empty one halfway.
Older houses
Plaster, lath and what's under the floor
Houses built before drywall caught on, which describes a lot of Roanoke's older neighborhoods, have plaster troweled over thin wood strips. Knock out one wall and you'll have several times the weight of the same wall in sheetrock, plus a cloud of dust. Say so when you call.
Old floor tile, mastic and duct wrap can contain asbestos. Don't break it up and toss it in a roll-off. The valley's waste authority lists asbestos as a material it handles separately; its residential disposal page says to contact it for help.
Timing the drop-off around demolition
The container is busiest during demo, the first few days. After that you only add scraps and packaging. Booking for the demo week and calling for pickup once the new cabinets are in is usually cheaper than keeping a box for the whole project.
Leave the old appliances out of it. Refrigerators and ice makers contain refrigerant, which most dumpster companies won't accept; many appliance stores haul the old one away when they deliver the new one.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.
