A dumpster for a roof tear-off
Torn-off asphalt shingles are dense, gritty with granules and add up fast. On a re-roof, the tonnage included in the rental usually sets the order, not the cubic yards.

Why a roll-off
Shingles have few other ways out
The Roanoke Valley Resource Authority lists shingles among the materials its transfer stations do not accept. Roanoke County's curbside crews won't pick them up, and Vinton's town code keeps roofing materials out of its collection too. For a tear-off, a container is the practical route.
Roofers often include haul-off in the bid. When yours didn't, getting rid of the old roof falls to you, so check the contract well before tear-off day.
Sizing
What changes the size
- Squares
- Roof area in roofing squares (a square is 100 sq ft). It's on your roofer's estimate; read it out on the call.
- Layers
- A second layer under the first roughly doubles the tonnage. Your roofer can tell from the edge of the roof.
- Decking
- Soft or rotten sheathing that gets replaced comes off into the same box.
- Tonnage
- Ask what the rental includes and how anything over it is charged.
Single-layer house roofs commonly fit a 10, 15 or 20 yard. Don't be surprised when the company suggests a smaller box than you pictured.
Placement on tear-off day
Ask the driver to set the box tight under the eave that gets torn off first, so the crew can shovel shingles off the roof edge or send them down a chute. Lay boards beneath the rails on asphalt. Move cars out of the fall zone, and roll a magnet over the lawn afterward to catch roofing nails.
Some companies price a shingles-only load lower than a mixed one. If so, keep household junk out of it.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.

Phone conversations can be recorded for quality and billing (how referrals work, privacy). Trash carts, recycling and curbside bulk pickup belong to City of Roanoke Solid Waste, not this number.
