Heavy debris
A dumpster for concrete, dirt and brick
A cubic yard of broken concrete can weigh more than a car. That's why heavy fill goes in a small container and why loading rules are stricter.

Loading rules you may hear
What the company will probably ask
- Small box
- Expect a 10 yard, sometimes smaller. A large container full of concrete couldn't be lifted or driven legally.
- Fill line
- Many companies mark a line partway up the wall for heavy loads. Stop there.
- Clean load
- Concrete, brick or dirt on its own may be priced differently from a mixed load. Keep trash out.
- Rebar and mesh
- Ask whether reinforced concrete is fine as is.
Small amounts
When a container is more than you need
For a handful of pavers or one broken step, a container may be overkill. Households in Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County and Vinton can drop up to 500 pounds of rock, dirt, brick, concrete or asphalt at an RVRA transfer station in a pickup no bigger than a one-ton.
Curbside pickup won't help here: Salem and Roanoke County both exclude dirt, rock and masonry, and Roanoke's brush and bulk rules leave out construction materials.
Protecting the driveway
A loaded heavy-debris box presses hard on its rails. Lay plywood or boards under them, keep it off fresh asphalt in hot weather, and don't park it over a septic tank or drain field.

Have three answers handy: what's going in, which patch of driveway or curb it can occupy, and the day you'd like to start. The rental company comes back with a container size, an open drop-off day and a figure for the whole job. Nothing gets scheduled unless you say yes.
